Newark Charter School Parent Volunteer Opportunities
Engaged parents help make Newark Charter School a special place. Parent volunteers are encouraged to become involved in the opportunities listed below. Please contact Sharon Dorr at 369-2001 ext. 400 or sdorr@ncs.k12.de.us if you are interested in getting involved!
Daily Recess Supervision:
Parent volunteers are needed to help with monitoring daily recess in the Elementary School...regardless of weather! Hours are as follows: Kindergarten: 11:15 – 11:45 a.m.; 1 st and 2 nd Graders: 12:25-12:55 p.m.; 3 rd & 4 th Graders: 11:55 a.m. – 12:25 p.m.
Homeroom Parent(s):
Homeroom parents serve as centralized coordinators to assist the classroom teacher throughout the year by helping to disseminate information to parents, coordinating homeroom participation for a variety of school-wide events including annual fundraisers.
Copy Helpers:
Teachers welcome volunteers to assist with daily and weekly copy needs for the classrooms.
Annual Fundraising Events:
- Fall Fundraiser: Each fall, NCS families have the opportunity to support the school by participating in a fall fundraiser. Parent volunteers are needed to help coordinate and manage the fundraiser.
- Annual Auction: The annual auction, traditionally held in November, is the largest fundraiser event for Newark Charter School. Volunteers are needed to serve on the planning committee as well as assist the day of the auction.
Monday Folder Volunteers:
Each elementary school classroom is in need of a volunteer to assemble the Monday folders and assist with the coordination and distribution of key information from the school to the NCS families.
Field Day Volunteers:
In May, all grades participate in a half-day of outdoor field events and games. Parent volunteers are asked to help staff the events.
Middle School Dance Chaperones:
Parent chaperones are needed for the dances held quarterly in the middle school.
Teacher Luncheons:
The Friends of Newark Charter School sponsors 3 meals for the faculty and staff held in August, December and May. Volunteers are needed to assist with all aspects of the meals.
Library:
Our Elementary and Middle School librarians receive help from our parents throughout the school year and assist with coordination of the fall and spring Scholastic Book Fairs.
Classroom Instruction Assistance:
Parents can assist in the classroom by volunteering to help with:
- tutoring, mentoring
- guest readers
- presenters (content area topics)
- literacy aides
- homework help (school time and after)
- word wall aides
- special projects and events, science labs
Box Tops for Education:
A great “at home” task! Volunteers are needed to prepare Box Tops for cash redemption. Newark Charter School receives $.10 for each box top and raised in excess of $1,100.00 last year.
Used Uniform Sales:
Held in August and February, the Friends of Newark Charter School sponsors used uniform sales for both the elementary and middle schools. Gently used uniforms are collected in the nurses' offices throughout the year. Volunteers assist with sorting and selling the day of the sales.
8th Grade Dinner Dance:
Eighth grade parents are invited to be part of the planning process for the annual 8 th Grade Dinner Dance held annually in June.
Lego League:
Coaches are needed for elementary and middle school teams beginning in September with competitions held in December and January. Lego League is an intermational competition for elementary and middle school students. Each year the contest focuses on a different real-world topic related to the sciences.
Odyssey of the Mind:
Coaches are needed for elementary and middle school teams beginning in December with competition in the spring. Odyssey of the Mind is an international educational program that challenges students in kindergarten through college to apply their creative problem-solving skills to a variety of situations that range from building mechanical devices to interpreting literary classics.
Middle School Athletic Coaches:
Parent volunteers are needed to assist with coaching middle school teams including boys and girls basketball and cross country.
